Special Districts

Burney Water District is an independent special district formed by an act of the California Legislature in November of 1944 as a County Water District under California Water Code.  The District's initial charter was to provide drinking water to the community of Burney, and has expanded to include providing sanitary sewer swervice and also parks and recration for our community. Special districts are the most direct link to government for many Californians, yet few people understand special districts’ work and history within the community.  Independent special districts are formed to provide a service such as water, sewer or fire protection.  Each has an elected board of directors that holds public meetings, much like a city council.
