                                     CANCELLATION OF BOIL WATER ADVISORY EFFECTIVE JULY 25, 2023 

On July 12, 2023, you were notified of the need to boil all tap water used for drinking and cooking purposes.

The Burney Water District Water System in conjunction with the State Water Resources Control Board's Division of Drinking Water has determined that, after disinfection of the entire water system, extensive flushing, and comprehensive testing of the water, your water is safe to drink.  It is no longer necessary to boil your tap water or for you to consume bottled water.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses).  You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

This notice is being sent to you by the Burney Water District in conjunction with the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water.

Please refer to the information below for a timeline of events that occurred beginning July 12, 2023 up until the cancellation of Boil Water Advisory that is effective as of July 25, 2023.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY - EFFECTIVE July 12, 2023

Effective July 12, 2023 all Burney Water District Customers are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes.  Please review the document below for further information regarding the Boil Water Advisory.

UPDATE July 16, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT.

Below is the process we are using to eliminate E. Coli from our drinking water and work toward lifting the Boil Water Notice:

On Friday afternoon, July 14, we added sodium hypochlorite to the water storage tanks and injection points at the District wells.  This is added to the water system to disinfect our water distribution system.

On Saturday, July 15, we monitored chlorine residual in the system at sample stations throughout the water system.  These stations are established sample locations in the water distribution system and used for routine sampling.

July 16, we continue to monitor chlorine residual while chlorine is in the water system.  The chlorine residual will be monitored and tested while in the water distribution system.  The system will be chlorinated for at least 24 hours.

When the above steps are satisfactorily completed, then we plan to flush the chlorine from the system and again sample at the stations to verify there is no chlorine residual in the water system.

After State drinking water regulators review the information we collected during the above steps, and the information is acceptable, we will plan on collecting water samples and delivering those samples to a certified laboratory that will provide test results for both E. Coli and Total Coliform.  This testing is over at least two different days.  Typically test results are provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received by the laboratory.

Depending on the test results, testing and the above steps may be extended.

The State will review the test results and whether the boil water advisory may be lifted.

UPDATE July 18, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

On July 17, we began flushing chlorine from the water system, dechlorinating, and continue flushing the water system today. When the system is dechlorinated, we will collect water samples and deliver those samples to a certified laboratory that will provide test results for both E. Coli and Total Coliform. This sampling will be conducted over two different days. As mentioned in the July 16 update, test results are typically provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received by the laboratory. We are working carefully through the process to assure our drinking water is safe and healthy and the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted as soon as possible.

UPDATE July 21, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

On July 17, we began flushing chlorinated water from the water distribution system. We flushed chlorine from our system every day through yesterday afternoon (Thursday) and checked chlorine residual throughout the system as we flushed.

Before we are able to test our system for the absence of E. Coli and Total Coliform, the next step in our plan, there can be no chlorine residual in the system; Chlorine residual is still present in the system even with all the flushing we have conducted.

Therefore, with the State regulators knowledge, we have changed valves in our distribution system. The goal of this change is to reduce chlorine residual in our system faster than flushing water through fire hydrants.  It is worth noting our system's storage reservoirs’ capacity is nearly 7 million gallons, and that doesn’t include the water in the miles of underground pipes. That is a lot of water to chlorinate and a lot of hydrant flushing to eliminate chlorine residual. With our change in the distribution system, we will closely monitor chlorine residual to identify when there is no chlorine residual and when we can sample.

At that point, we will collect samples and deliver those samples to a certified laboratory that will provide test results for both E. Coli and Total Coliform.  This testing is over at least two different days. Test results are provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received by the laboratory.

The State will review the test results and whether the boil water advisory may be lifted.

UPDATE July 22, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

This morning we monitored the chlorine residual throughout the water distribution system.  Then we focused on water system flushing in areas of the system where chlorine residuals are still present.  As of today, the chlorine residuals indicate yesterday’s system changes helped to reduce the chlorine residual at several of the sample stations.

We will continue to closely monitor chlorine residual to identify when there is no chlorine residual and we can sample.

At that point, we will collect samples and deliver those samples to a certified laboratory that will provide test results for both E. Coli and Total Coliform.  This testing is over at least two different days. Test results are provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received by the laboratory.

The State will review the test results and whether the boil water advisory may be lifted.

UPDATE July 23, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

Today we monitored the chlorine residual throughout the water distribution system.  We were able to collect our first round of samples for laboratory testing.  The second round of samples is expected to take place tomorrow.  If we are able to collect the second round of samples tomorrow, they will be taken to the laboratory for testing.  Test results are provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received by the laboratory.

The State will review the test results and whether the boil water advisory may be lifted.

The District truly appreciates the patience of everyone in our community as we deal with this unforeseen problem. 

UPDATE July 24, 2023 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

Today we monitored the chlorine residual throughout the water distribution system .  We were able to collect our second round of samples for laboratory testing.  The samples were taken to the laboratory today.  Test results are provided by the laboratory the day after the samples are received.

The State will review the test results and whether the boil water advisory may be lifted.
